Local colleges head down the stretch

As local high school basketball teams left playing head into the elimination rounds of the State Tournament this weekend, northeast Georgia College teams are also in the home stretch as well.<br> <br> The North Georgia College and State University teams play at Shorter College in Rome Monday night beginning at 6:00 for the women&#39;s game.<br> <br> Saturday night, the teams split in Dahlonega with Brewton-Parker.<br> <br> Keisha Hall&#39;s 28 points. led the #5 (NAIA) rated Lady Saints (26-2, 11-1 in the Georgia-Alabama Carolina Conference) to a conference 64-58 victory. <br> <br> The North Georgia men lost 92-82. Jamar Tyler led the Saints (8-19, 3-12 GACC) with 20 points. Marcus Hawkins swept the boards with 12 rebounds.<br> <br> Derrick Green of B-P led all scoring with 34.<br> <br> The Piedmont women, ranked #1 in the National Christian College Athletic Association at 18-6, 6-2 in the Great South Athletic Conference, begin play in the NCCAA South Regional in Chattanooga, Tennessee Monday.<br> <br> <br> <br> The Lady Lions are coming off an 84-67 win over Stillman Saturday night. Tara Cohron led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds for Piedmont.<br> <br> The male Lions open play in the GSCA Tounrey Thursday. The Piedmont men( 9-16, 0-8) lost 97-89 to Stillman Saturday night.<br> <br> Tremayne Pender (22) Roger Hazelwood (20), and Brandon Banks (20) all scored 20 or more, but the Lions still couldn&#39;t pull it off. East Hall alumni Tavarvess Ware (four points, six rebounds) and Derrick Cheeks (one point, two rebounds), also played for the Lions.<br> <br> Fellow ex-Viking Antione Whelchel had a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) in helping Murray State out of Kentucky to its sixth straight win Saturday evening. Whelchel also had six assists for the Racers (15-11, 9-5 Ohio Valley Conference) in the 92-86 victory over Southeast Missouri State.<br> <br> Murray State is slated to end the regular season this week with games against Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State on Thursday and Saturday.<br> <br> There was also some local college baseball action over the weekend with Piedmont College defeating Huntington College 7 - 5.
