SAVANNAH - The only black-owned financial institution in southeast Georgia turns 75 Saturday.

Carver State Bank was founded in Savannah in 1927 by Louis Toomer, who wanted to give his neighbors the financial tools they weren't allowed to get at a white-owned bank. The bank's original name was Georgia Savings and Realty Corporation, and it helped finance many of the first black-owned businesses and homes along Georgia's coast.

Bank employees will celebrate the birthday this afternoon with a party in Savannah.
