MACON - LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez and two-time gold medal hurdler Roger Kingdom headed the class Saturday night at the 45th annual induction ceremonies for the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
This year's inductees also included former Atlanta Hawks guard Lou Hudson, basketball standout Cindy Brogdon, former Tennessee football star Chip Kell and record-setting high school basketball coach A.L. Williams.
Lopez, who lives in Albany, has 48 career victories and won the LPGA Championship three times (1978, 1985, 1989). She's married to former major leaguer and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame member Ray Knight.
``Nancy embodies the highest ideals of sportsmanship, generosity, and grace and exemplifies these compelling qualities in the actual arena where the stakes are the highest and the pressure is the greatest.'' former United States Golf Association President Judy Bell said of Lopez.
Kingdom, a native of Vienna, won gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1984 and 1988 Games. He also was given the Jesse Owens International Athlete Award in 1989.
Brogdon, a member of the 1976 U.S. women's basketball team that won the silver medal, played for Mercer and Tennessee during her career. She later played in the Women's Professional Basketball League.
``Cindy possessed very unique and rare basketball skills,'' said her Olympic coach, Billie J. Moore. ``She was one of the most gifted players to ever play the women's game.''
Kell thanked his parents for their role in helping him achieve his football feats.
``For all the green beans and mashed potatoes and gallons of milk it took to get me here,'' he said. ``And carrying me around in an old station wagon.''
