ATLANTA - Officials said Thursday the U.S. Coast Guard will build a new station in Brunswick to improve security for the port there and enhance safety for commercial and private boaters.
Georgia homeland security coordinator, Bob Hightower, said what the average citizen will see day-in and day-out is water safety and boating safety. He added that the main thing officials are pleased with is the enhancement of the security at the ports of Brunswick and Savannah.
He spoke during a news conference with Governor Barnes and Coast Guard officials to discuss the joint agreement.
The state is selling the Coast Guard just under one acre of land to build a new multimillion dollar district headquarters at Brunswick, which will include a building of more than 10,000 square feet and a 100-foot dock.
It will replace temporary facilities.
The station will house 39 Coast Guard personnel and in June a 47-foot Coast Guard cutter will be assigned to the station. Besides rescue work, the cutter will be used to board and inspect vessels of high interest to security officials.
