Georgia cancer patients seek treatment outside of state

ATLANTA - More than 1,000 patients go out of Georgia for cancer treatment each year because the state does so little cancer research. <br> <br> There&#39;s a state-funded effort to reduce the number who go elsewhere by securing a federal cancer center in Atlanta. But officials working on the project say success is at least three years away and not guaranteed. Competition will come from other states and in-state rivalries. <br> <br> The goal is for Emory University&#39;s Winship Cancer Institute to become a ``comprehensive cancer center&#39;&#39; of the National Cancer Institute. <br> <br> The designation would bring nearly $1 million a year for research equipment, cancer nurses and computer data bases.
