MARIETTA - The Cobb County Commission has given the National Park Service 4.3 acres of prime property where a bloody Civil War battle was fought.

The land is located at the end of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

The transfer of the deed Wednesday completes the park's effort to preserve the fourth and final corner of Kolb's (Cobb's) Farm. The land was the scene of a battle June 22, 1864.

The National Park Service owned the farmhouse and three plots of land, but a private owner held the remaining corner.

A group called the Kolb Farm Coalition organized in March 2001 after Racetrac Petroleum offered to buy the land to build a service station.

Racetrack later withdrew its offer, and the coalition asked the commission to buy the property. The coalition agreed to raise $30,000 to pay for improvements to the intersection where the land is located.
