COVINGTON - Four cows are on the loose after escaping from a stalled tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 near Covington.
Covington Police Lieutenant Philip Bradford says the four animals escaped about 3 p.m. Sunday when the floor board of a trailer carrying 59 bovines snapped. They were last seen headed toward Atlanta.
The cows caused one minor fender bender and several other close calls before officers shut a section of the interstate.
At one point, horseback riders from a nearby rodeo tried to rope the animals.
The cows jumped through an opening in a guardrail onto a grassy embankment.
Police called off the search after almost five hours.
Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer -- Johnny Jarel -- was charged for operating a ``junky'' vehicle.
