VALDOSTA - Valdosta State fans and officials alike are getting ready for an unexpected trip to the Division Two title game Saturday in Florence, Alabama.
The Blazers face Grand Valley State in Michigan after a 21-12 semifinal win over Texas A&M Kingsville. And they're sure to have their hands full.
Grand Valley State's (13-0) David Kircus set an all-division, single-season record in touchdown catches with 32, including four in the 44-7 semifinal win over Northern Colorado. The Division 1-A mark is 27 TD catches, set by Louisiana Tech's Troy Edwards in 1998.
Worsening matters for the Blazers (14-0) is the injury of star cornerback Chris Fowler, who leads the team with seven interceptions. He hurt his knee colliding with Kingsville quarterback Abel Gonzales in the fourth quarter.
No one had expected the Blazers to go to the title game. Graduation ceremonies had been scheduled for the same day. Players' exams had to be rescheduled.
The last time Valdosta State won a national title was 1979, in baseball.
