Students signed a resolution and sent letters to their legislators urging them to work for the release of Salai Tun Than, a 1955 Georgia graduate.
Tun Than, a retired professor who earned his master's degree in agronomy from Georgia, was arrested in 2001 for handing out pro-democracy flyers and staging a solo protest in front of the City Hall in the capital city of Yangon. He was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison.
According to a report made to the United Nations General Assembly in November, there are an estimated 1,500-1,600 political prisoners in Myanmar, also known as Burma.
