ATHENS - First-graders at a school in Athens have collected about 1,100 books and educational CDs for homeless children.
The 22 students at Barrow Elementary School are in Natalie Hicks' class. She says they have been studying a unit on homes and family. She says the children became concerned when they saw photos of homeless people.
The books will be donated to children at three shelters in the Athens area -- Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Project Safe and the Salvation Army.
The students selected the books, counted the books, read the books, wrote book reviews and made cards. The book reviews and cards will be placed in the books.
The teacher says many of the children brought in copies of their favorite books to share with the homeless children.
