ATLANTA - Two northeast Georgia colleges are getting high marks in a new report on the passing rate of aspiring teachers who take the state's certification tests.
The Professional Standards Commission says North Georgia College & State University and Toccoa Falls College, along with the University of Georgia, Agnes Scott College, Oglethorpe University, and Covenant College, had some of the highest passing rates. Fort Valley State University, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College had the lowest passing rates.
The commission reports that slightly more would-be teachers are failing the tests right when they are needed most.
The commission says about 20 percent of prospective teachers taking the tests last year failed. That's a slight increase from three years earlier. At some colleges, more than half of those taking the tests failed the exams they needed to pass to become certified teachers.
Education officials say the drop in pass rates comes as enrollment in Georgia's schools is growing and more qualified teachers are needed.
