HAYNEVILLE - Houston County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing next month to determine how to spell the name of the town Hayneville correctly.

Some have said the small Houston County town's name is spelled Haynesville, with the letter ``s'' in the middle. Other people, however, have pointed out that two 19th century maps spell the town without the letter ``s.''

About 50 names have been collected on a petition to have the state Department of Transportation add the letter ``s'' to the town's name on road signs along U.S. 341.

The department says that's ok as long as the commissioners approve. Advocates of adding the letter ``s'' to the town's name say the department dropped the letter ``s'' when it replaced some signs in the 1970s.
