DORAVILLE - General Motors plans an undetermined number of layoffs and more holiday time off at its suburban Atlanta assembly plant early next year.
The Doraville plant, which produces minivans, employs 3,800 hourly and 244 salaried workers.
The layoffs are due to production cuts blamed on declining sales of minivans.
This year, the plant built 222,672 through November, and the automaker sold 148,032 during the same period, GM spokesman Dan Flores said.
The decision to slow the assembly line and to extend the holiday shutdown that begins Friday to Jan. 27 instead of Jan. 2 was made by company executives Monday. Workers at the Doraville plant were told of the plans Tuesday, Flores said.
Laid-off hourly employees will receive 95 percent of their pay and will continue to receive benefits under a contract with the United Auto Workers.
