ALPHARETTA - A trio of landmark silos are safe from the wrecking ball thanks to Alpharetta's efforts.
Using two-year's worth of funds from the Georgia Greenspace Program, the city has bought the 50-year-old silos on Crabapple Road. Officials say they will stand as a centerpiece for a park.
The almost 40-foot-tall silos harken to the area's farming days of the past. Officials said the silos and accompanying property were purchased for about 350-thousand dollars.
Councilman Jim Paine said the property had little commercial value unless the silos were torn down.
The structures were part of a one-thousand acre farm bought in the 1940s and 1950s.
Other silos were eventually torn down when a nearby shopping center was built.
