Andersonville mayor dies at 73

ANDERSONVILLE - Andersonville Mayor Leon B. Holloway Sr., a man known for his generosity, died Friday at his home. He was 73. <br> <br> For 12 years, Holloway served as mayor of Andersonville, a tiny town of fewer than 300 people in Sumter County, 49 miles southeast of Albany. <br> <br> Andersonville Guild President Peggy Sheppard said he often would bring gifts of fresh fruit to Andersonville residents when he returned from trips. <br> <br> Holloway, a farmer and owner of Holloway Vegetable House, served as chairman of the Sumter County Board of Commissioners before becoming mayor. <br> <br> Wade Halstead, a friend of Holloway&#39;s, served with him on the commission. <br> <br> ``He was, in my mind, a truly good citizen of Sumter County. He was a Southern gentleman and he was a friend to everyone,&#39;&#39; Halstead said. ``I never heard anyone say anything bad about him, and that is unique.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Holloway was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this month. He died after returning from the hospital for Christmas.
