ANDERSONVILLE - Andersonville Mayor Leon B. Holloway Sr., a man known for his generosity, died Friday at his home. He was 73.
For 12 years, Holloway served as mayor of Andersonville, a tiny town of fewer than 300 people in Sumter County, 49 miles southeast of Albany.
Andersonville Guild President Peggy Sheppard said he often would bring gifts of fresh fruit to Andersonville residents when he returned from trips.
Holloway, a farmer and owner of Holloway Vegetable House, served as chairman of the Sumter County Board of Commissioners before becoming mayor.
Wade Halstead, a friend of Holloway's, served with him on the commission.

``He was, in my mind, a truly good citizen of Sumter County. He was a Southern gentleman and he was a friend to everyone,'' Halstead said. ``I never heard anyone say anything bad about him, and that is unique.''
Holloway was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this month. He died after returning from the hospital for Christmas.
