Atlanta to reconsider tree-cutting ordinance

ATLANTA - A year-old ordinance that requires developers in Atlanta to pay into a trust fund when they cut down mature trees is being reconsidered. <br> <br> The city council will consider changes in the ordinance at a meeting January 6th in an effort to appease developers. Builders say cutting down trees has become so costly it is making many plots undevelopable. <br> <br> They say the ordinance is threatening to suffocate home building in the city, especially in inner-city neighborhoods. <br> <br> But environmental and neighborhood groups say the ordinance protects Atlanta&#39;s tree canopy from wanton destruction. <br> <br> They say that without trees, Atlanta would be an undesirable place to live.
