NEW YORK - Rey Sanchez is the New York Mets' shortstop of the present while their shortstop of the future hones his skills. Sanchez has accepted a one-year contract worth $1.3 million. He can make another $700,000 in performance bonuses.
Sanchez goes back to his natural position after playing 107 games as Boston's second baseman. He hit .286 for the Bosox last season, raising his lifetime average to .275.
The slick-fielding Sanchez made just six errors in 149 games at short for Atlanta and Kansas City in 2001.
Sanchez will hold the position while the Mets wait for Jose Reyes to develop. Reyes probably will begin next season with Triple-A Norfolk.
