ATLANTA - An undetermined number of people who recently stayed at Holiday Inns and other hotels owned by the same company were overcharged by mistake, officials said.
Atlanta-based Six Continents Hotels said on its Web site that the error affected less than 1 percent of its guests but did not indicate exact figures.
The company owns more than 3,200 hotels known as InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge Suites by Holiday Inn.
``On October 29th, Six Continents Hotels discovered a problem with some credit card and debit card transactions at many of the hotels, resulting in some guests being overcharged,'' according to the Web site.

Six Continents said the mistake was made by First Horizon Merchant Services of Englewood, Colo., which processes credit cards used by hotel guests.

The company said it was ``taking immediate steps to address the situation'' and recommended that anyone who stayed at any of its hotels recently contact their credit card company.
Six Continents said First Horizon had contacted the credit card issuers, which were in the process of reversing the billing errors. Six Continents also has set up a hot line.
