Georgia honors its veterans

ATLANTA - At least a dozen ceremonies are scheduled around the state this week as Georgia honors its veterans. <br> <br> Events Monday include the Savannah Veterans Day Parade and the Golden Isles Veterans Council Veterans Council program at St. Simons Island. <br> <br> In west Georgia, the Fort Benning Infantry Band will play patriotic tunes and politicians from the Columbus area will speak this morning. <br> <br> At 2 p.m. at Fort Benning, the Third Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division and Outpost 60 of the Society of the Third Infantry Division will hold its Veterans Day observation at the National Infantry Museum. <br> <br> Events also are planned at Claxton High School, the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dublin and Portal High School in Bulloch County. The events are sponsored in part by Fort Stewart. <br> <br> On Friday, Fort Gordon will hold a commemorative service for German and Italian prisoners of war who died in captivity at Camp Gordon and other POW camps during World War Two. <br> <br> Many local governments are closed in honor of Veterans Day as are state and federal agencies and banks.
