FORT GORDON - John A- MacQuilliam's tour of duty ended almost 35 years ago when he came home from Vietnam. But after the terrorist attacks of September 11, MacQuilliam felt called back to the military.
In January, at age 53, he joined the Georgia National Guard. He was put on active duty in May to take individual advanced training at Fort Gordon and will graduate Thursday.
MacQuilliam first enlisted in the Army a few weeks after his 18th birthday in 1967 and served three years of active duty during the war.
After September 11, the National Guard told MacQuilliam he was too old to serve -- the age cutoff is 40. But each year of previous service extends that date.
