COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina starting quarterback Corey Jenkins will move to defense and backup Dondrial Pinkins will get his first start against Florida, coach Lou Holtz said Tuesday.

The move is in response to the Gamecocks' inability to move the football in the past three games.

``It's to help our football team,'' Holtz said. ``We've had problems in the secondary. We've had problems on third down.''

Jenkins is the team's leading passer and rusher. In practice Tuesday, he took reps both at quarterback and at free safety a position he would most likely play in the NFL.

Jenkins took the move in stride. ``Right now, I think it's just an experiment,'' the 26-year-old senior said. ``It's to help our football team.''

Offensive coordinator Skip Holtz fought his father on a move of Jenkins three weeks ago, before the Gamecocks' three-game losing streak began. The younger Holtz said he wasn't excited about breaking in a new starter against No. 20 Florida at the Swamp on Saturday.

``If you'd give him back to me, I'd take him right now,'' Skip Holtz said of Jenkins. ``I've got a quarterback who has 500, 600 plays under his belt (and) I'm going to break in a new one at Florida? Does it excite me? No. I'd much rather have Corey, but I understand coach is going to make the move that's in the best interest of this team.''

To make room for Jenkins in the defense, free safety Deandre Eiland is moving to boundary cornerback a position that has had four different starters this season.
