U.S. wins last two matches to take first-round lead

ST. SIMONS ISLAND - The teams of Hale Irwin-Tom Kite and Mark O&#39;Meara-Tom Watson won the final two matches to lift the United States to a 3 1/2-to-2 1/2 lead over The Rest of the World on the opening day of the UBS Warburg Cup Friday. <br> <br> Irwin and Kite beat Rodger Davis and Stewart Ginn 3 and 2 to get the U.S. even and then O&#39;Meara and Watson beat Barry Lane and Denis Durnian 2 and 1 to secure the lead. <br> <br> At one point on the opening day the U.S. trailed the World team in four of the six foursome matches on the Seaside course at Sea Island Golf Club, a par 70 playing to 6,945 yards. <br> <br> The first team to 12 1/2 points wins the second-annual event. The U.S. won the inaugural last year at Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
