DECATUR - A DeKalb County Juvenile Court judge has blasted the county's emergency shelters for children, citing drugs and prostitution as some of the reasons he issued an order two weeks earlier not to send anyone to the shelter.
Judge Robin Nash testified Friday during the second day of hearings over a lawsuit against the state welfare department.
In his Oct. 31 order, Nash also wrote state officials and criticized them for trying to build a new facility for DeKalb's shelter kids. In the letter Nash said he was ashamed to be part of the system that would allow that, and that he had blood on his hands, according to a story today in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Lawyers for the state called on the county's chief juvenile court judge to refute Nash's statement.
Judge Gregory Adams said he didn't agree with Nash's order and thought it went beyond what he should have been doing.
The plaintiffs are nine children who either are now or have been in the system.
