Mill closing hurting Camden County

ST. MARYS - Camden County is feeling the effects of the closure of the Durango-Georgia Paper Company. <br> <br> About 900 people lost their jobs when the mill at St. Marys shut down earlier this month because of safety concerns. <br> <br> As a result, the county has been faced with a loss of revenue from the closure. <br> <br> The county has made its $21.6 million budget assuming it won&#39;t see the $1.4 million that Durango owes in current and back taxes. <br> <br> County officials have approved a property tax hike to offset the revenue loss. They also began cost-cutting measures, including a hiring freeze to save money. <br> <br> Volunteer and health officials worry about not being able to meet the demand for services from those who lost jobs. <br> <br> Officials said Durango employees may need food and help paying for utilities. <br> <br> St. Marys Mayor Deborah Hase says she hopes former employees won&#39;t sell their homes but will instead find new jobs and commute.
