Son of former Winterville mayor killed by truck

ATHENS - A Winterville man is dead after he was accidentally struck by a truck outside a manufacturing plant in Athens. <br> <br> Sixty-three-year-old David Whitley Whitehead was knocked down and run over by a six-wheel truck Tuesday as it backed up to a loading dock at Carrier Transicold. The plant manufactures refrigeration units for trucks. <br> <br> Whitehead was the son of the late Wesley Whitehead -- longtime mayor of Winterville -- a small town just east of Athens. <br> <br> The driver of the truck was not charged, but police say an investigation continues. <br> <br> Neither Whitehead nor the driver works at the plant.
