ATLANTA - Georgia's chief medical examiner says work is wrapping up on the remains of corpses found at the Tri-State Crematory, even though many human remains have yet to be identified.

Doctor Kris Sperry met with local officials today in Walker County in northwest Georgia, where hundreds of rotting corpses intended for cremation were found discarded at the crematory in February.

Sperry said, ``We are nearing the end of what we are going to be able to accomplish.''

He had predicted from the beginning that not all human remains would be identifiable.

So far, officials have gotten positive ID's on 195 out of the more than 340 remains.

The crematory operator, Ray Brent Marsh, is on bond awaiting trial on nearly 400 felony charges related to the discarding of bodies. He also faces numerous lawsuits in Georgia and across the state line in Tennessee.

Sperry said the state investigation should be complete by the end of the year. Local officials are planning some type of public memorial where the unidentified remains will be interred. State law prevents the unidentified remains from being cremated in case they need to be exhumed for possible identification in the future.
