ATHENS - The late Eugene Odum, a University of Georgia ecologist, left 25 acres along the Middle Oconee River in Athens-Clarke County to the University of Georgia Foundation.

Odum, who died August tenth, foresaw a possible sale of the undeveloped property by UGA, and included in his will a provision asking that the director of the UGA Institute of Ecology be consulted during any sale.

The executor of Odum's will, attorney Bob Edge of Atlanta, said the will also stated that protective covenants be used to help maintain the desired character of the area.

The will had drawn some interest as residents of the area surrounding the property grew concerned about possible development.

Gary Barrett, the Odum Professor in UGA's Institute of Ecology, also declined to describe Odum's specifications for the land, but said Odum was not averse to having the property developed for residential use, although Odum did not want it to be used for apartments or condominiums.
The 25 acres of land is currently zoned single-family residential.
