Coca-Cola's neon sign returns to downtown Atlanta

ATLANTA - A historical replica of a popular Coca-Cola neon sign will return to downtown Atlanta, more than 20 years after the original flashed in front of the Candler Building.

The new Coke sign will be placed atop the Olympia Building at Five Points, overlooking Woodruff Park and Underground Atlanta along Peachtree Street.

The state, which owns the Olympia Building, signed a contract this week to lease space for the sign at $7,000 a month. Coca-Cola Co. will pay for installation, maintenance and utilities.

The colorful, circular display became an Atlanta landmark but, in 1981, it was dismantled. At the time, Georgia-Pacific Corp. had moved its corporate headquarters and objected to the sign's proximity.

The sign's new location is a few blocks south of its original downtown spot.
