Emmpak Foods Incorporated of Milwaukee recalled 416,000 pounds of ground beef in September in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, but recalled an additional 2.3 million pounds late Wednesday.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said consumers should check their freezers for the product. He said most of the beef was sold in packages of five pounds or larger.
The Agriculture Department said the beef contaminated with the harmful bacteria, E- coli, was sold in grocery stores, hotels, restaurants and other food institutions nationwide. The meat is linked to 40 illnesses.
Emmpak spokesman Mark Klein said the expanded recall includes products marked with the ``sell by'' dates of 9-05-02, 9-06-02, 9-07-02 or 9-08-02. The packages also include the establishment code of ``EST. 20654'' inside the department's seal of inspection.
The initial recall included beef packages that have ``sell by'' dates of 8-29-02, 8-30-02, 8-31-02, 9-01-02 or 9-02-02.
