DAYTON, OHIO - Former Dayton, Ohio, police Chief Ronald Lowe Senior -- who rose through the ranks to lead the police force before retiring in 2000 -- has died. He was 57.
Lowe died Monday at Hospice of Dayton. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Lowe had been a Dayton policeman for 19 years. He left to become police chief in Chatham County, Georgia, but returned to Dayton to become chief in 1995.
Chatham County Manager Russ Abolt hired Lowe to be police chief in Chatham County on Georgia's coast. He was the first black chief in Chatham County and served from 1993 to 1995.

Abolt remembered him Tuesday as ``a true professional who was an agent of change and a true leader in law enforcement. He had a real personal touch about him and was never above the law.''

He noted that Lowe telephoned him at home the first Memorial Day weekend he was chief to tell him about a minor rear-end collision he's had while working in the field. Abolt said Lowe told him he was writing himself up because of the accident.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the House of Wheat.
