ATLANTA - Metro Atlantans who promise to stop driving to work alone in their car can get three dollars a day for carpooling or using mass transit.

The Clean Air Campaign announced the cash incentive program Thursday. Commuters who pledge to use alternative transportation over a three-month period will receive a check for three dollars for every day they don't drive alone, up to a $180 reward.

The qualified alternatives are carpooling, mass transit, teleworking or cycling or walking.

To get the money, commuters have to live or work in one of 13 metro Atlanta counties and have a boss sign off on their promise not to drive alone.

The program has allotted up to $400,000 for the incentives, and the campaign will stop taking applications once the money is spent. Participants pledge to use alternative transportation for at least 15 working days in the three-month period.

The program is the nation's first to offer cash to an entire city of commuters. The money comes from federal funds, with smaller portions coming from corporate donations and state coffers.
