MARTINEZ - Three members of an east Georgia family died Friday in a house fire in Columbia County.

The victims were Harry Spivey, 50, his wife Linda Spivey, 48, and their 16-year-old daughter Holly Spivey.

The house was already engulfed in flames when Martinez firefighters arrived. The three were pronounced dead on the scene at 1:51 a.m., apparently from smoke inhalation.

Officials said the home did not have a working smoke detector.

A witness said it was too late when neighbors tried to break in and rescue the family.

``A neighbor and I kicked open the front door, but the smoke was all the way to the floor, black and billowing and there were flames everywhere. There was no way we could go in,'' said Ray Blessing.

The bodies will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab. Officials have not determined the cause of the fire.
