Former Atlanta Flame winger Jacques Richard dies

QUEBEC - Jacques Richard, a former NHL player with Quebec, Atlanta and Buffalo who later served a prison sentence for drug smuggling, was killed in a car accident Wednesday.<br> <br> The 50-year-old Richard lost control of his car and crashed into a culvert late Tuesday night, according to Quebec police.<br> <br> Richard retired in 1983 after a 10-year NHL career. He was arrested at Montreal&#39;s Mirabel Airport in February 1989 when he returned from Colombia with more than five pounds of cocaine in the bottom of a golf bag. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison.<br> <br> Richard was the first-ever draft pick by the Atlanta Flames in 1972 and later played with Buffalo before finishing his career with Quebec. His career scoring totals were 160 goals and 147 assists for 307 points.<br> <br> His best NHL season was in 1980-81 with the Nordiques, when he scored 52 goals with 51 assists.<br>
