SAVANNAH - A Georgetown woman is accused of shooting her boyfriend in the head, dragging him into a bedroom closet and leaving him in a closet to die.
Chatham County police said Wendy Fortner, 28, allegedly shot William Robert Fraley in the head Saturday at their apartment on St. George Boulevard. She told police they had been fighting and she shot Fraley in self-defense.
Fortner was charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder Wednesday. She posted bond and was released later that day.
Fraley, who suffered brain damage, was on life-support at Memorial Health University Medical Center, Chatham County Capt. Bob Merriman said.
Fortner went to the Pooler Police Department Tuesday to report the incident. She told police she wanted to hide Fraley's body from their 4-year-old son, Merriman said.
Pooler police called Chatham County investigators, who went to the apartment.
``I thought he was dead. But then he moved his feet and I about jumped 10 feet,'' Merriman said.
Fortner told police she wrapped the gun in a trash bag and put it in Fraley's pickup truck in the apartment parking lot. Police found the .22 caliber weapon in the truck.
The child has been with Fortner's mother since the shooting, Merriman said. The state Department of Family and Children Services has been notified.
