MILLEDGEVILLE - Lincoln County coach Larry Campbell reached the pinnacle of high school football Friday as the winningest coach in Georgia football history with his 347th career win over Georgia Military Academy Prep, 35-14.

``When we got down by 14 early on, I thought we'd never get it,'' Campbell said. ``But I'm just thankful it came down here and that it's over.''

Campbell surpassed Dan Pitts, former Mary Persons coach, on the victory list.

Early on the outcome looked different.

GMC defensive lineman Troy Nelson picked off a Mel Partridge pass on Lincoln County's second drive and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. GMC scored again on its next possession to make it 14-0.

But with 11:18 left in the half, Lincoln County started playing like a state ranked team. Using six running backs and two quarterbacks, Lincoln County scored on its next three possesions to end the half ahead 20-14.

GMC head coach Gary Allen tipped his hat to Campbell's milestone.

``He's a class act, Allen said. ``I told him before the game that he was going to get it some time this season, but I just wished I hadn't witnessed it.''

Lincoln County recovered a GMC fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, and with 2:26 off the clock, Josh Beard scored to put the Red Devils up 28-14 after a two-point conversion.
