PEACHTREE CITY - Peachtree City officials have approved building a cart-only parking lot at McIntosh High School to eliminate cart parking on city streets.

The golf cart lot will be located next to the football practice field and will only be accessible by golf cart paths, said Assistant School Superintendent Stuart Bennett.

A raised sidewalk will separate the cart lot from the student lot.

The decision reverses a longtime policy of banning golf carts from the campus. School administrators thought it would be dangerous to allow golf cart drivers and car drivers on the same parking lot.

Most students park their carts behind the school but officials say the parking situation has gotten out of control. The numbers increased noticeably after the city council lowered the golf cart driving age from 16 to 15 earlier this year.

Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown, who advocated for the cart lot, said the city will pay part of the construction costs.

``We just thought it's a matter of time before somebody is killed,'' Brown said.
