Bail posted for mother charged with murder

ATLANTA - Nakia Burgess, the mother accused of murdering her child after she left her 3-year-old strapped in a sweltering car, was released from jail Friday on a $40,000 bond. <br>

Burgess' attorney, Phinia Aten, said an outpouring of donations from sympathizers helped her client post bail. Burgess had been on suicide watch at the Fulton County Jail. <br>
<br>
Asan'te died Oct. 2 after Burgess left the child, who had Down syndrome, in a car for several hours while working at a temporary job as a transcriptionist. <br>
<br>
Hospital officials said the child's body temperature reached 108 degrees. <br>
<br>
Burgess' release did not come in time to attend her daughter's funeral Thursday in Trenton, N.J. But Burgess was allowed to visit the Decatur funeral home where her daughter's body was being kept before the funeral. <br>
<br>
A memorial services was held Saturday morning at St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. <br>
<br>
Aten said Burgess left her child in the car because she had nowhere else to leave her after day care arrangements fell through.
