ATLANTA - More than 80 Atlanta restaurants will join a nationwide campaign Wednesday to stop serving Chilean sea bass until the species recovers from overharvesting.
The fish, which has firm, white, mild-flavored flesh, is a favorite of chefs and diners.
The AJC is reporting Wednesday that more than 800 restaurants across the country have joined the campaign and 700 more have agreed to take the popular item off their menus.
Experts say that overharvesting and especially illegal fishing have seriously depleted the population of sea bass around Antarctica, its main habitat.
Some seafood importers say the boycott of legally caught sea bass hurts legitimate fishing boats and the whole industry. They say a better solution is to crack down on poachers.
