WASHINGTON - Airline hassles created since September 11 have many people opting to drive short trips instead of boarding a plane.

Analysts say folks are finding that it's easier to just get in the car and go, rather than pay new airline fees or subject themselves to random security searches.

A survey says the number of people flying commercially between 200 and 400 miles dropped 22 percent in the year after the attacks. And the airline industry is still struggling to recover.

From January to September of this year, the major carriers had 8.3 percent fewer passengers than they had during the same period a year earlier. The industry also has cut 80,000 jobs.

The news is not all bad for air travelers. Flight delays are down, but the industry knows it has a public relations problem and is looking for ways to improve travel.
