IRVING, TEXAS - The NFL has a new career rushing leader.
Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys broke Walter Payton's mark of 16,726 yards with an 11-yard burst up the middle early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against Seattle in Dallas.
Smith later picked up the 150th touchdown of his career on a one-yard run that capped the record-breaking drive. By the end of that drive, Smith was 16 yards beyond the record and over 100 yards for the day.
Payton's record had stood since 1987.
Former Dallas fullback Darryl Johnston, who blocked for Smith for over 100 games from 1990 to 1999, was at today's game as a Fox broadcaster. The two embraced on the sidelines shortly after Smith broke the record and Johnston's microphone picked up sounds of Smith crying as they hugged.
