FORT BENNING - Fort Benning has unveiled a monument to soldiers of the 29th Infantry Division, which lost 5,000 men between D-Day and VE-Day.

As ``Taps'' played to end the 30-minute ceremony outside the National Infantry Museum on Wednesday, there were tears among the more than 80 veterans of the 29th who attended.

Most were dressed in suits or blazers, wearing hats with their unit designations embroidered on the sides, and medals on their breast pockets. Groups came from the 115th, 116th and 175th Infantry Regiments. The artillerymen were represented, as well as medics and quartermasters and office personnel.

The monument - with the 29th's motto ``Let's Go!'' inscribed in huge letters on the black granite - is a replica of the one put up overlooking Omaha Beach in Normandy in 1994, on the 50th anniversary of D-Day.
