WASHINGTON - New al-Qaida video found by soldiers in Afghanistan shows suspected terrorists sought by U.S. authorities, who plan to release portions of the tapes and seek public help in finding the men, law enforcement officials said Thursday.
The videos retrieved by U.S. special forces provide first-time images of a raft of suspected terrorists whose identities are not known to authorities. Photos of the images will be released by the FBI and the Justice Department, perhaps as early as Thursday, in an effort to enlist the help of people who may have seen the men in the United States or abroad, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The existence of the new video was first reported by NBC News.
The video is among a mountain of items found in Afghanistan and elsewhere that U.S. investigators are combing through for clues about al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden and potential new terrorist attacks.
Documents and a videotape found in Afghanistan and passed to authorities in Singapore foiled a planned terrorist attack and resulted in the breakup of an al-Qaida cell there.
In Australia, a tape from Afghanistan showing al-Qaida militants practicing a mass assassination of world leaders at a golf tournament and plans for an attack on a motorcade in Washington was analyzed by U.S. defense officials.
