State Troopers report 14 fatalities during New Year's Holiday

GAINESVILLE--State Troopers investiaged 259 accidents in Northeast Georgia during the long New Year's travel period.

According to Patrol spokeswoman Donna Garrett,the accidents resulted in 58 injuries and three fatalities--one New Year's morning in Habersham County, a second Monday night in Mountain City and a third Saturday night in Dawson County.

Five fatalities statewide New Year's day marred an otherwise safe holiday. Across Georgia, troopers investigated 2,470 collisions, resulting in 663 injuries and 14 fatalities, four fewer than had been predicted.

The Patrol says the New Year's holiday period,which ran from 6pm Friday through midnight Tuesday, was the 30th time holiday traffic deaths fell below prediction since Georgia introduced a seat belt law.
