ATLANTA - A stairway that collapsed at a nightclub on New Year's Eve will be repaired this week, the club said.
A stairway leading to a top floor of the Masquerade collapsed just before midnight Monday, causing minor injuries to about 10 people.
Fire officials estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people were in the club. They cited the Masquerade for overcrowding, blocking a fire exit and failing to place an occupancy sign in a prominent location.
Masquerade promoter Greg Green told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that ``old age'' apparently caused the accident. He said the top floor, ``Heaven,'' would re-open Saturday. The downstairs ``Purgatory'' and ``Hell'' levels were to re-open Thursday.
