GAINESVILLE - Lakewood Baptist Church will soon introduce "captioned" worship services for the hearing impaired.

Using computerized stenotype and cationing encoder to feed spoken words onto screens in the church's sanctuary, worshipers will be able to read each sermon, prayer and hymn begining on Sunday.

"I am moved by the leadership and commitment of our church members to offer this first-ever, captioned worship opportunity for our region," Lakewood senior pastor Dr. Tom Smiley said. "This will be a spiritual empowerment."

Phyllis Wiley will be the church's staff coordinator for the captioning service and is excited about the new service.

"It's an exciting opportunity for us to interface world-class technology with our traditional services to reach those who are in need," Wiley said.
