From now on the National Guard Armory off Alta Vista Road will be known as the Howard T. Overby National Guard Armory by a state house
resolution authored by Representative Carl Rogers.
Friends and relatives gathered between the Bradley Fighting Vehicles to recall Overby's achievements, which included commander of the local National Guard unit and World War Two Army officer.
Overby served in both the Georgia House and Georgia Senate, where he was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
Overby also practiced law for over 50 years.
He died in 1990 at age 75.
"My dad believed so strongly in the notion and concept of public service," said Howard T. (Tommy) Overby, Junior,Senator Overby's son.
"I can think of no other institution so deeply rooted in public service than the Georgia National Guard."
Georgia's Adjutant General David Poythress was the featured speaker at Friday's memorial event at the armory.
"This is only the second armory to be named for anybody," said General Poythress.
"Howard Overby was a great friend of mine, a great man and a great citizen, and we're delighted to have this armory named for him."
