SAVANNAH - The Savannah Morning News has broken ground on a new 145,000-square-foot production facility that newspaper officials say will meet advertiser demands and get the paper to readers earlier in the day.
During a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, publisher Frank T. Anderson talked about how newspaper production has evolved from labor-intensive machines to high-speed electronic technology.
Anderson says the new plant will be state of the art.
The building is scheduled for completion in 18 months. It is expected to cost more than $10 million, not including presses and other equipment.
Newspaper officials say it's hard to meet advertiser demands for more color ads and advertising supplements because the current facility lacks the space and necessary equipment. The newspaper's editorial, advertising and circulation departments will stay at their current location in downtown Savannah.
The Savannah Morning News is owned by Morris Communications Corporation. The privately owned company publishes newspapers and magazines and has operations in outdoor advertising, radio broadcasting, computer services and book publishing and distribution.
