COLUMBUS - A bicycle and lawn mower repair shop owner was found innocent Thursday of charges in the death of a 15-year-old boy he shot as three youths tried to burglarize his business.
The jury rejected District Attorney Gray Conger's plea that Jack Tant, 74, be convicted of either murder or manslaughter in the June 16, 2000, shooting of Jermaine L. Long, who died on a path between stacked bicycle parts.
Defense lawyer Mark Shellnut said Tant ``went up to check on his business and was attacked by intruders. It's nothing more than that.''
Conger said it was true that Long was out to steal bicycle parts.
``But that doesn't carry the death penalty,'' the prosecutor said.
