LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for giving beer and car keys to a 14-year-old who wrecked a car, killing his brother and another teen-ager.
Luis Guzman, 31, of Stone Mountain was convicted Friday of vehicular homicide in the deaths of Robert Hernandez, 12, and Matt Sartor, 16, also of Stone Mountain.
The sentence was five years short of the maximum Guzman faced on seven charges, including furnishing alcohol to minors. It also far exceeded the two-year sentence given to Joey Hernandez, 14, for driving 60 mph in a 15-mph zone before crashing the vehicle on May 9, 2000.
Prosecutor Phil Wiley said that in previous cases, adults faced civil lawsuits, not felony charges, for allowing teens to drink and drive.
``It's certainly rare that a prosecutor will approach it that aggressively,'' said Rick Malone, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia.
``There has been a lot more attention to teen-age driving and those who furnish teens with alcohol. And someone needed to step up,'' Malone said.
