ATLANTA -Surgeon General David Satcher has accepted a job at Morehouse College, where he will lead a new center devoted to promoting effective health care, The Associated Press learned Monday.

The Morehouse School of Medicine planned a news conference Tuesday to announce the first director of its National Center for Primary Care. A school source speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed Satcher's hiring to The AP.

In Washington, spokeswoman Cynthia Bennett said the surgeon general would formally announce his plans Tuesday.

Satcher was appointed surgeon general by President Clinton. His four-year term ends Feb. 13, and last year he announced plans to step down.

The Morehouse job would be a homecoming of sorts for Satcher, who holds a bachelor's degree in medicine from the Atlanta school. He also spent time as a professor there before becoming director of the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
